Long famous as the source of Austria’s noble sweet wines, Burgenland has in recent years come to define and then to dominate Austrian red wine production as well. Burgenland owes much to the influence of Lake Neusiedl, the shallow lake at the center of the region. An equally strong influence is the fact that Burgenland has historically been the poorest region of Austria, and the least established, and least traditional wine zone. This has encouraged, or at least made possible, an era of discovery and experimentation among Burgenland’s winemaking community, moving the zone forward generations within the last decade. Four subregions, Neusiedlersee, Neusiedlersee-Hugelland, Mittleburgenland and Sudburgenland are recognized.
